My Hole-in-One Story
by Jim Lorenz
A couple of years ago one of my partners, Fred Markert, entered us into a golf tournament supporting our local hospital-The Transylvania Waterfall Open. As the tournament approached we invited two of my customers, John Cypherd and Ken Dingler to round out our foursome and so we now had our team.
We all met at the Burlingame Country Club at 7:30 in late May for breakfast and the tournament. Every year this event has produced nearly $50,000 per year for a great cause. On every hole there are sponsors names and on some of the par threes there are substantial prizes. This year on hole # 4 there was a new Land Rover and a secondary prize of a 7 day cruise if some hit a hole in one on another hole. On hole # 12 was a $25,000 cash prize for a hole in one.
We had a shot gun start at 9:00 A.M and we started our day on hole #6. Ken and John are good golfers, while I fell into the category of a duffer and I’d say Fred is the same although he hits the ball very well. I struggled along on the first few holes and then began dialing in a little better as we progressed. We eventually arrived at hole # 12 with the cash prize of $25,000.
The other Mountain Golfingthree hit their balls and landed on or close to the green. They told me the shot was 165 yards and I said I had just the club for this shot – my #5 wood. I teed up my 4 Nike golf ball lined up my shot and looked at the drop from the tee to green of nearly two hundred feet and let it go. The ball hit the green but I didn’t see it roll anywhere.
As we approached the green and walked up the guys had found their balls and asked me where mine was. A little astonished I said I don’t see it.
Ken said, ”Let me check the cup.”
“Four Nike?” I quipped
“Yep!” “It’s in the hole!”
We all celebrated and I couldn’t believe I won and at a time which the money would come in handy.
We approached the club and I was asked if I told Marijo, my wife about our cruise. I hadn’t and we finished out the round and had a lunch with all of the entries. I was the talk of the day. It was the first hole in one in the tournament in 25 years. I was awarded at this lunch the paperwork for the money, a seven day cruise and closest to the pin-a $50.00 discount in the pro-shop. Wow! I was stunned, honored and a lot of great emotions came into play.
On my way home I called Marijo and told her about my day. She too was stunned and happy for me. It was truly a great day and round of golf with some dear friends.
